Claymont, Del. —

Celebrating a year since its organization, the Stockdale Civic Association is hosting a community block party at Archmere Academy Saturday afternoon.

The event is designed for Stockdale residents and business owners to meet face-to-face for fun, but also to increase engagement between residents and the civic association.

Stockdale, which sits on the east side of Philadelphia Pike between Holy Rosary Parish and Archmere is home to 360 total residences and a handful of businesses that front the Pike. The civic association has 87 members.

Like other civic associations in the county, Stockdale looks out for the community's collective interests, whether it's organizing a block watch, paying for snow plowing or hosting community events.

For years, residents along Manor Avenue have had issues with overflow parking during sporting events at Archmere, and while that issue hasn't been put to rest completely, lines of communication have been opened via the civic association, according to President Matt Sargent.

New Castle County has an estimated 250 civic and maintenance organizations.

A conduit between residents and government, they bring communities together, maintain open space and stormwater ponds and organize to purchase snow plowing and other community-wide services.

In the coming year, Sargent said the association hopes to solidify the block watch by assigning block captains. He also hopes to make progress on securing funding for road repairs within the neighborhood and work with police to help reduce speeding on its interior streets.
